All about...
Mahon,
Mahon is the ideal starting point for exploring Menorca, the Balearics’ most northerly sister, like the entire island, Mahon has preserved an authentic feel. Having escaped relatively unscathed from 1970s skyscraper hotel “planning”, the island’s protected countryside and isolated beaches are a joy to discover. Not that today’s visitors are the first to realise this, though. The British were charmed by Mahon’s impressive port long before the first charter flight landed on Menorca’s soil in the 1950s. Once coveted for its strategic value, nowadays this protected natural harbour is admired for the spectacular boats bobbing in its calm waters, and for the numerous bars and restaurants to choose from on the waterfront. Up a set of endless steps, Mahon – in true Mediterranean style – bustles with activity (apart from siesta time, naturally). Between cobbled streets, foreboding stone churches and charming squares, Mahon invites you to elbow your way past gossiping housewives at the many open air markets, dodge children chasing each other to the swings, and eavesdrop while elderly men put local politicians through their paces. But if all that seems like hard work, just sink into a chair on a café terrace and watch the world go by.

Best guided tour:
The fortress of Isabel II, La Mola
The stern architecture, foreboding cannons and infinite tunnels at Isabel II’s Spanish-built fortress at the mouth of Mahon’s port never fail to impress. Lasting over two hours, the guided tour always feels too short, and if the barren landscape of La Mola (the peninsula where the fortress is located – and which it is named after) looks familiar to you that might be because it was used for filming part of the TV series, Hornblower.

Best venue:
Teatre Principal
Mahon’s grand theatre was an obligatory stop off point for touring opera companies as far back as the 18th century. Complete with plush velvet seats, lush fittings and ornate boxes, the theatre is worth visiting even if there isn’t a concert on.

Best local tipple:
Gin
Blame the British for a Menorcan love of gin. British sailors yearned for the spirit when they conquered the island in the 1800s, so enterprising Mahoneses began brewing island gin to quench their thirst. Nowadays locals drink it from a shot glass (gin sec), or mixed with cool lemonade (pomada). There’s an (admittedly touristy) factory shop in the port where you can learn more – and savour a drop.

Best meal out:
Itake
What with odd glasses, mismatched crockery and a menu-come-history book, Itake certainly isn’t your typical tourist restaurant in the port. But it’s well worth reserving a table in this intimate eatery, as the food (try kangaroo stew, duck or wild mushroom crepes) is fabulous.
